Walter Nessler – Hitler ABC

Artist: Walter Nessler

The pictures were done in 1937; however, the book was not published until 2000 and as far as I know this is the only published version of the images.

Nessler was born in 1912 in Leipzig. He was not Jewish but was part of a radical group of artists declared to be degenerate by the Nazis.

He had produced the artwork for this remarkable book while in Germany in 1937; He and his wife (Prudence Ashbee, a dancer whom he had sketched while she was in Germany) left Germany separately and Prudence smuggled the drawings in her own luggage and thus it got to England.

His reward was to be imprisoned by the English in 1940 where he spent some months as a questionable German citizen.

Nessler was a famous artist whose career extended for decades and this is a prime example of his passion as well as artistic skills.
